Three anti-bullying bills are quietly moving forward in the General Assembly that would increase the likelihood of litigation against public school districts and transfer yet more parent responsibility into the hands of educators and school-board members. They may become new laws before you know it.

Last week Gov. Gregoire signed Rep. Marko Liias legislation to help prevent school bullying and youth suicide. The new law creates an ongoing group to look at ways for schools to prevent harassment, as well as including mental health and suicide prevention in classroom activities.

A Union Township man has been charged with sexual misconduct with a minor and possession of child pornography, the Porter County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said. According to the probable cause affidavit filed by Det. Gene Hopkins of the Porter County Sheriff’s Police, on Jan. 16 a girl younger than 16 reported that, while on Christmas break, she had begun texting someone she believed to be a boy at her school but was in fact that boy’s relative, James Gore.

A truck driver from Chickamauga, Ga., who went to a Jefferson County restaurant thinking he was meeting a 14-year-old boy for sex will serve 10 years in prison, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance announced today. Tracy Shawn Guthrie, 34, pleaded guilty in February to attempting to entice a child to engage in illegal sexual activity.
